Chicago History Museum’s mission is to share Chicago’s stories. It serves as a hub of scholarship and learning, inspiration, and civic engagement for Chicagoans and the broader community. The museum is a city staple, and as a team of native Chicagoans, it holds a special place in our hearts.
We partnered with Chicago History Museum to translate the Democracy Limited in-person exhibition into an immersive online experience when COVID-19 forced the museum to close in early 2020. The microsite explores women’s activism in Chicago to secure the right to vote.
The Democracy Limited microsite chronicles the suffrage movement and connects themes of the past with the present over the course of six chapters. Beyond the six main chapters, the site guides users to learning resources and additional content related to the history of activism and influential Chicagoans. The site also moves into the community and the classroom through an engaging walking tour experience and The Voids Project, a project led by a group of Chicago teens with the goal to amplify the role of African American women in the suffrage story.
